The Five Pillars of Islam & Connection to Judaism

The five pillars of Islam are foundations of the Muslim faith.
​They are Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawn and Hajj.

Islam

The Shahada
(Testimony)

Muslims recite this testimony of faith: 

"There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the prophet of Allah."


Salah
(Prayer)

Muslims pray 5 times a day.

Zakat
(Required Giving)

Muslims are required to give 2.5% of their yearly savings to charity. 

Sawm 
(Fasting)

Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hajj 
(Pilgrimage)

The word Hajj comes from the root meaning circle. Muslims circle the Kaabah in Mecca.

Judaism

The Shema
(Witness)

​Jews recite this testimony of faith: 

"Listen Yisrael, HaShem is our God, HaShem is One."

Tzlota/Tefillah(Prayer)

Jews pray 3 times a day. 

Tzedakah (Required Giving)

Jews are obligated to give 10% of their yearly income to charity. 

Tzom
​(Fasting)

Jews fast from sunset to sunset on fast days like Yom Kippur, the day of atonement

Chag
​(Pilgrimage Holidays)

The word Chag comes from the root meaning circle. The pilgrimage holidays are Passover, Sukkot, anjd Shavuot.
